The Art of Medicine! 2026

The Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts' (SIGMA) visual art exhibition The Art of Medicine! 2026 took place on March 23, 2026, on the 1st floor of the Lion's Eye Building, 5-7pm.
The exhibition featured 23 artists and 52 pieces of artwork, spanning a wide range of mediums including paintings, ceramics, mixed media, ink and charcoal drawings, textiles, and poetry. The diversity of artistic expression reflected the many ways members of the medical community engage with creativity, storytelling, and reflection outside of their clinical and academic work.

The event was organized by second-year medical student Christi Kruger, who also contributed several of her own pieces to the exhibition.
Live music was provided by the SIGMA Band, who performed a lively mix of pop, soul, and feel-good music. The band included Camilo Fernandez (L1) on bass and drums, Ryan Smith (L3) on guitar, Joseph Starns (L4) on bass, Samuel Rosenau (L1) on guitar, Carter Rigby (L2) on piano, and vocalists Cara Ramos (L4), Myra Berthiaumi (L1), and Grace Tomeny (L4).

SIGMA, the Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts, is a group of medical students with a passion for things other than the hard sciences. Members are dancers, musicians, DJs, painters, poets and everything in between. Events are usually a good balance between an escape from school and a fundraiser for various charities. Past beneficiaries have included Camp Tiger, Make Music NOLA, Operation SMILE, and the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.

  • A sculptural artwork resembling the shape of a human brain, positioned upright on a curved base against a reddish-brown fabric background. The sculpture is made of a light-colored material and constructed from intricate, interwoven ribbon-like forms that twist and loop to create a complex, open framework. The flowing strips form layered, abstract shapes that suggest the folds and structure of a brain while remaining decorative and stylized. The base appears as a continuation of the same material, curling outward like a wave or folded sheet. The surface shows subtle texture and fine striations, giving the piece a handcrafted or 3D-printed appearance. by Nsser A. Abdelall

    Calligraphy of the Mind

  • Close-up painting of Arabic calligraphy rendered in metallic gold paint across the center of a textured, deep maroon and plum-colored background. The calligraphic script forms an elegant horizontal composition with flowing, connected letterforms and decorative flourishes. Surrounding the main line of text are faint, larger calligraphic shapes in a muted purple tone layered into the background, creating depth and contrast. The surface shows visible brush texture and a matte finish, while the gold lettering appears slightly raised and reflective. by Leya Abdelwahed

    Lean In

  • Highly detailed black-and-white ink drawing featuring an intricate, layered composition of mechanical and organic elements interwoven into a dense, circular cluster. At the center, geometric structures resembling scaffolding, wheels, and architectural frameworks are surrounded by curved, ribbed shapes and segmented forms. Circular motifs and ring-like elements appear throughout, some containing smaller patterns such as lines, dots, or landscape-like textures. Around the central mass, swirling cloud-like shapes and sweeping arcs create a sense of motion and depth. Fine linework, crosshatching, and stippling are used extensively to create shading and texture across all elements. The background remains mostly white, emphasizing the complexity and contrast of the black ink. by Mahad Ahmed

    Midnights at the Window Shop

  • Highly detailed black-and-white ink drawing composed of intricate, organic and abstract forms merging into a dense central cluster. The composition features swirling, layered shapes that resemble bones, coral, shells, and mechanical components intertwined. On the left, rounded and tubular structures with fine linework and crosshatching create a sense of depth and texture, while the center contains a complex mass of overlapping forms, including ribbed, spiky, and folded elements. To the right, more biomorphic shapes and rounded forms appear alongside bold, circular patterns filled with solid black and curved white marks. Along the bottom, a series of arch-like shapes and fractured geometric pieces anchor the composition. The overall image is rendered with meticulous line patterns, stippling, and shading, creating a dynamic, surreal scene with no single focal point. by Mahad Ahmed

    The Inland Tide

  • Close-up painting of a dog’s face rendered in thick, textured brushstrokes against a soft pink background. The dog’s head fills most of the frame, with floppy ears extending slightly outward on both sides. The fur is painted in layered tones of cream, tan, brown, and white, with visible palette-knife or heavy brush textures creating a dimensional, almost sculpted surface. Dark, rounded eyes and a black nose are centered and clearly defined, standing out against the lighter fur. The bottom portion shows longer, streaked brushstrokes suggesting the dog’s chest fur. The pink background features loose, painterly strokes that contrast with the detailed face. by Amelia Bourgeois

    Bagel

  • Realistic painting of a black bear and a small cub in a forest setting. The larger bear stands on the left side, its body angled slightly toward the right, with detailed fur rendered in deep black tones and subtle highlights. The smaller cub stands close beside the larger bear on the right, partially turned forward. Both animals are positioned among tall tree trunks with textured bark that rise vertically through the scene. The forest is filled with soft green foliage and dappled light, creating a bright, sunlit background. In the foreground, fresh green grass stretches across the bottom of the image. The overall composition emphasizes the close proximity of the two animals within a calm woodland environment. by Amelia Bourgeois

    Beryl

  • Illustrated scene of a small shrine building set within a dense forest of tall, straight trees. In the foreground, large tree trunks frame the view, their bark textured in shades of brown and gray. The shrine, positioned slightly left of center, features a red wooden structure with a pale yellow sloped roof and a short staircase leading up to an open entrance. The interior doorway shows simple geometric decorations. Surrounding the shrine is a clearing with light-colored ground, patches of green moss, and a narrow path. In the background, numerous tall trees rise vertically, their bluish-green foliage fading into the distance, creating depth. A small rectangular stone block sits to the right of the shrine. The image has a hand-painted, watercolor-like style by Elizabeth Carey

  • A realistic painting of a black cat in profile sitting on a windowsill, facing left. The cat has a sleek, glossy coat and wears a bright red collar with a small round gold tag. Behind the cat, a softly blurred outdoor scene in green and tan tones suggests foliage. Reflected in the window pane is a faint image of the cat’s face and glowing yellow eyes. by Taniya de Silva

  • Painting of a small brown, black, and white dog standing on grass, facing forward with mouth open. The dog wears a red collar with a round tag, and a red-and-yellow ball lies nearby on the ground. The background is a soft blend of green tones by Taniya de Silva

    Fetch

  • A colorful landscape painting depicting an open grassy field bordered by tall, slender trees with sparse canopies. Several horses are scattered across the scene: one stands in the foreground near the left edge, while two others appear farther back in the middle ground—one grazing and another standing near a pale shape on the ground. The background features a dense line of trees and a soft horizon, possibly with water or marshland beyond. Above, the sky is filled with large, billowing clouds in shades of white, blue, and light gray. The painting uses soft brushstrokes and warm green and earthy tones. by Taniya de Silva

    White Coats and Fluorescents

  • Black-and-white charcoal drawing of two people closely framed from the shoulders up against a softly shaded background. One person is shown in profile, leaning in to touch their lips to the cheek of the other person. The other person faces forward with a slight upward tilt of the head. Both figures wear simple clothing, including collared garments and a jacket. The shading is soft and blended, with darker tones defining the facial features and clothing contours. The composition is centered, with the figures occupying most of the space. by Renee Gardner

    Brothers

  • Painting of a child-like figure standing against a textured, deep blue background. The figure wears a bright red coat with large gold buttons, a matching red knit hat, a dark collar, and black gloves. In one hand, the figure holds a thin white string attached to a single dark balloon floating above and to the left. The facial features are softly rendered, with visible brushstrokes giving a painterly, expressive quality. The balloon appears nearly black with subtle highlights, contrasting with the vivid red clothing. The background is loosely painted with layered blue tones and abstract shapes by Renee Gardner

    Girl with Balloon

  • Painting of a cluster of brightly colored flowers set against a dark, nearly black background. Large yellow and orange daisy-like blooms dominate the right and center, with layered petals and textured centers painted in warm tones. On the left, deep red flowers with rounded petals contrast with the yellows. A detailed butterfly with patterned wings in cream, black, and orange rests on one of the red flowers, wings spread open. Green leaves and stems weave through the composition, adding depth and structure. The brushwork is visible, giving the image a textured, painterly feel. by Renee Gardner
