The Art of Medicine! 2026

The Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts' (SIGMA) visual art exhibition The Art of Medicine! 2026 took place on March 23, 2026, on the 1st floor of the Lion's Eye Building, 5-7pm.
The exhibition featured 23 artists and 52 pieces of artwork, spanning a wide range of mediums including paintings, ceramics, mixed media, ink and charcoal drawings, textiles, and poetry. The diversity of artistic expression reflected the many ways members of the medical community engage with creativity, storytelling, and reflection outside of their clinical and academic work.

The event was organized by second-year medical student Christi Kruger, who also contributed several of her own pieces to the exhibition.
Live music was provided by the SIGMA Band, who performed a lively mix of pop, soul, and feel-good music. The band included Camilo Fernandez (L1) on bass and drums, Ryan Smith (L3) on guitar, Joseph Starns (L4) on bass, Samuel Rosenau (L1) on guitar, Carter Rigby (L2) on piano, and vocalists Cara Ramos (L4), Myra Berthiaumi (L1), and Grace Tomeny (L4).

SIGMA, the Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts, is a group of medical students with a passion for things other than the hard sciences. Members are dancers, musicians, DJs, painters, poets and everything in between. Events are usually a good balance between an escape from school and a fundraiser for various charities. Past beneficiaries have included Camp Tiger, Make Music NOLA, Operation SMILE, and the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.

  • A stylized still life painting of a tabletop arrangement set against a dark background. On the left, a glass jar holds green plant cuttings with rounded leaves and long stems. In front of the jar lies a closed, thick book with a pale blue-green cover, with an orange resting partly on top of it. To the right stands a green banker’s desk lamp with a shiny shade and a gold-colored vertical stand. In the foreground, a small clear glass container holds a trailing plant with red and green leaves that spread across the surface. A red patterned cloth sits beneath the glass container. The objects are outlined with bold pink lines, giving the composition a vibrant, graphic quality by Katherine Taylor

  • A highly stylized still life painting with bold, flat shapes and bright colors set against a deep black background. On the left, a simplified green plant with rounded and elongated leaves outlined in vivid pink sits in a blue cylindrical vase. In front of the vase rests an orange with a pale circular highlight, placed partly on a closed book with a light blue cover. To the right, a green banker’s desk lamp with a white underside and a brown vertical base stands on a tabletop. Behind and beneath the lamp are abstract red rectangular shapes that resemble a geometric wall pattern or bricks. The tabletop is composed of blocks of cream, pink, and red tones, with strong outlines emphasizing each object. The composition uses thick pink contour lines throughout, creating a graphic, modern look. by Katherine Taylor

  • An abstract, geometric still life painting composed of simplified shapes outlined in bright pink against a black background. On the left, a stylized plant with rounded and elongated green forms sits in a tall, blue rectangular vase. In front of the vase, overlapping translucent circular shapes in orange, green, and yellow suggest fruit resting on a tilted, light blue surface resembling a book or tabletop. To the right, a green banker’s lamp with a long, flat shade and a brown vertical base appears simplified into flat color blocks. Beneath and around the lamp are angular red and brown rectangles arranged like a geometric wall pattern. The tabletop is divided into sections of cream, pink, and red, with sharp edges and strong color contrasts. by Katherine Taylor

  • An abstract painting filled with layered, expressive shapes and lines spread across a textured surface. The composition features a mix of organic and geometric forms, including curving blue and red lines, clusters of looping orange shapes, and dark vertical and rounded forms resembling simplified figures. In the upper left, a green plant-like form emerges from a cut log or stump shape, while across the center and right are interwoven lines and blocks in black, red, yellow, and light blue. The background blends muted tones of brown, gray, and lavender with visible wood-like grain. The overall style is energetic and dynamic, with overlapping marks and varied brushstrokes suggesting movement and complexity. by Katherine Taylor

    Untitled

  • A circular mixed-media textile artwork displayed in an embroidery hoop resting on a wooden stand. The piece is composed of densely layered stitches, yarn, beads, and sequins arranged in an abstract design. Bright colors—including purples, blues, greens, yellows, and pinks—form irregular shapes and textures across the surface. On the left, a cluster of iridescent sequins and blue beads creates a sparkling, raised area, while thick purple yarn forms ridged, coiled textures around the edges. Toward the center, various stitched sections in lavender, teal, and magenta are interspersed with looping thread patterns and small bead details. On the right, elongated stitched lines and small knotted accents form a contrasting area of lighter purple and cream fabric. The background fabric is a neutral beige, visible between stitched areas. by Katherine Taylor

    Untitled

  • Close-up portrait painting of a person shown in three-quarter profile against a warm, textured orange background. The composition focuses on the head and shoulders, with the subject turned slightly to the right while looking off-frame. The figure has tightly curled hair styled in a rounded shape and wears a blue garment visible at the shoulder. The face is rendered with smooth blending and detailed highlights, especially around the eyes, nose, and lips, creating a realistic, dimensional effect. Strong contrast between light and shadow defines the contours of the face and neck. The background is a uniform orange tone with subtle brush texture, emphasizing the subject’s silhouette. by Kirk Thame

    Untitled

  • Black-and-white pencil drawing of a young child seated with legs crossed and arms folded loosely across the lap. The child wears a sleeveless dress with a softly textured fabric and a rounded neckline, along with a graduation cap positioned slightly off-center on the head, with a tassel hanging to one side. The child’s head tilts gently to one side, and the pose creates a compact, inward composition. The bare feet are visible, with one foot resting lightly on the ground and the other lifted. The drawing is rendered with smooth shading and careful attention to light and shadow, giving a realistic, three-dimensional form against a plain white background. by Kirk Thame

  • An expressive, abstract painting featuring a bold, cartoon-like blue animal figure resembling a dog or wolf occupying the lower half of the composition. The figure has a simplified blocky shape, triangular ears, a long rectangular snout, white circular eyes, and a wide mouth filled with sharp, triangular white teeth outlined in black. The figure is painted in deep blue with thick black outlining. The background is highly energetic and layered with sweeping brushstrokes and splashes of color, including bright yellow drips and splatters, black raised paint droplets, and broad strokes of red, purple, and blue. The upper portion includes looping yellow lines and scattered black dots that create a sense of motion. The surface shows heavy texture, with visible paint drips, splatters, and thick applications of pigment. Near the bottom right corner, there is a small handwritten signature that appears to read “Sara V.” by Sara Vukelic

    In My Dreams

  • A dark, moody painting of a single human figure shown from the chest up against a nearly black background. The figure is turned slightly to the side, with the head angled downward and partially obscured by shadow. Soft, cool-toned highlights in shades of blue and gray illuminate portions of the face, shoulder, and upper torso, revealing subtle contours while much of the figure remains in darkness. The figure appears to have shoulder-length hair rendered with textured brushstrokes. The clothing is a simple top painted in muted blue tones. The background is minimally detailed, composed of layered dark browns and blacks with faint visible brushstrokes, emphasizing the contrast between light and shadow on the figure. The overall composition creates a subdued, atmospheric effect with limited color contrast. by Sara Vukelic
