The Art of Medicine! 2026

The Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts' (SIGMA) visual art exhibition The Art of Medicine! 2026 took place on March 23, 2026, on the 1st floor of the Lion's Eye Building, 5-7pm.
The exhibition featured 23 artists and 52 pieces of artwork, spanning a wide range of mediums including paintings, ceramics, mixed media, ink and charcoal drawings, textiles, and poetry. The diversity of artistic expression reflected the many ways members of the medical community engage with creativity, storytelling, and reflection outside of their clinical and academic work.

The event was organized by second-year medical student Christi Kruger, who also contributed several of her own pieces to the exhibition.
Live music was provided by the SIGMA Band, who performed a lively mix of pop, soul, and feel-good music. The band included Camilo Fernandez (L1) on bass and drums, Ryan Smith (L3) on guitar, Joseph Starns (L4) on bass, Samuel Rosenau (L1) on guitar, Carter Rigby (L2) on piano, and vocalists Cara Ramos (L4), Myra Berthiaumi (L1), and Grace Tomeny (L4).

SIGMA, the Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts, is a group of medical students with a passion for things other than the hard sciences. Members are dancers, musicians, DJs, painters, poets and everything in between. Events are usually a good balance between an escape from school and a fundraiser for various charities. Past beneficiaries have included Camp Tiger, Make Music NOLA, Operation SMILE, and the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.

  • Beaded mosaic artwork featuring a circular medallion design centered on a horizontally striped background of white, blue, and teal beads. The central circle is outlined in red and gold beads and contains a still-life arrangement: a gold beaded basket filled with fruit in bright colors, including green, purple, and pink elements, topped with white bead accents suggesting highlights. At the lower left of the basket, a small red lobster shape is formed from beads, adding a distinctive detail. The beads vary in size and finish, creating a raised, textured surface with reflective highlights. The overall composition is highly detailed and symmetrical, with intricate patterns and strong color contrast by Abhirami Jeyaseelan

  • Open sketchbook page filled with detailed black-and-white ink anatomical drawings and handwritten notes about the heart and major blood vessels. At the top, the title reads “Heart cross section.” On the left page area, a large drawing of a dissected heart shows internal structures such as chambers, valves, and chordae tendineae, labeled “SVC” and “IVC.” Below it, a circular cross-section of the heart is shown with labeled regions marked by letters. On the right side, smaller diagrams depict the aorta and branches, including a labeled example of “Aortic dissection (Type B)” with notes explaining blood flow disruption and a “false lumen” versus “true lumen.” A long vertical drawing shows the descending aorta with numbered arterial branches, accompanied by a list identifying vessels such as the brachiocephalic artery, subclavian arteries, carotid arteries, renal arteries, and others. Additional handwritten notes at the bottom mention “Cardiac cycle: systole (S)” and “AV valves: closed, semilunar valves: open.” The page is cream-colored, with blue ink annotations and fine black pen illustrations. by Christi Kruger

  • Detailed black-and-white ink drawing of a classical-style cherub reclining on an ornate sculptural structure. The cherub, shown with curled hair and a rounded body, leans against draped fabric and decorative elements, with one arm extended across layered carvings and scroll-like forms. The surrounding structure features intricate baroque-style details, including swirling patterns, carved textures, and ribbon-like elements cascading across the composition. Fine crosshatching and linework create depth and shading throughout the figure and architectural forms. Above the cherub, handwritten text reads “BASES PILARVM EX LAPIDE TIBURTINO MARMOREIS PONTIFICATVS AN. XIII.” In the lower right corner, additional handwritten notes identify the subject as “Cherubs – Baldacchino, St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican, Gian Lorenzo Bernini,” followed by a signature and the year “’25.” by Christi Kruger

    Bernini's Cherub

  • Detailed black-and-white ink drawing focusing on the torso and hands of a classical sculptural figure. The composition shows a muscular midsection with carefully rendered anatomy, including defined abdominal forms and textured skin created through dense crosshatching. The figure’s hands rest across the lap, holding a long, cylindrical object resembling a staff or rod. Draped fabric with ornate trim and beaded decorative elements surrounds the waist and upper legs, suggesting elaborate classical attire or armor. Portions of sculptural ornamentation appear near the chest, including layered, carved details. The background is minimal, with a solid dark rectangular area on the left providing contrast. Fine linework and shading throughout emphasize volume, texture, and depth. A small signature with the year “’26” appears in the lower right corner by Christi Kruger

    Medici's Muscle Cuirass

  • Black-and-white ink drawing of a seated figure resting against a simple interior backdrop. The figure sits with legs bent and slightly crossed, with one arm folded across the lap and the other hand supporting the chin. The head is tilted slightly, and the face is rendered with fine linework and shading, emphasizing the eyes and facial contours. The figure wears a sleeveless top or dress and a beaded necklace. Behind the figure, a vertical rectangular shape suggests a window or curtain, while a dark horizontal band beneath the figure indicates a bench or seat. The drawing uses crosshatching and line shading to create texture and depth. A small signature with the year “’25” appears on the right side of the image by Christi Kruger

The surface shows organic, cell-like shapes and layered waves, with a cluster of fine gold speckles in the upper left area. The textures appear glossy and fluid, with soft blending and high contrast between dark and light areas. by Daniela Loose

CML - Centrální Mozek Lidstva (Residual)

  • Abstract fluid painting with dynamic, swirling shapes in gold, mustard yellow, deep burgundy, black, white, and muted olive green. Thick, ribbon-like streams of color twist and overlap across the canvas, creating marbled patterns with intricate, lace-like cellular details and small bubble textures. The background alternates between solid black and cream-colored sections, enhancing contrast and depth. Some areas feature smooth gradients while others show dense clusters of tiny cells and speckles by Daniela Loose

    Ermine in Wonderland

  • Abstract fluid artwork featuring a dark reddish-brown background with a dramatic diagonal burst of marbled paint flowing from the lower left to the upper right. The central band consists of rich gold, yellow, and copper tones interwoven with deep red and hints of pink, forming intricate, lace-like cellular textures. Small flakes of metallic gold are scattered across the left side, adding contrast against the smooth, dark background. Fine, thread-like paint lines extend outward from the main flow, enhancing the sense of motion. by Daniela Loose

    Variation on Phoenix

  • Painting of a whimsical, cartoon-style yellow slug centered against a muted olive-green background. The slug has a smooth, rounded body with soft shading to suggest form, and two raised antenna-like eye stalks on top of its head. Its face features large white eyes with black pupils and a wide, open smile showing a pink tongue, giving it a playful, friendly expression. The slug rests on a dark, curved surface at the bottom of the image, possibly a tabletop. by Shelby MacRae

    Portrait of a Slug

  • Expressive portrait painting showing a grayscale face wearing rectangular eyeglasses set against a dark black background. The face is rendered in shades of white, gray, and black with strong highlights and shadows, creating a sculptural, high-contrast effect. Surrounding the head and shoulders on the left side is a bold, textured mass of thick brushstrokes in fiery red, orange, and yellow, suggesting hair or an abstract aura. The paint is applied in visible, layered strokes, giving the surface a rough, tactile quality. The composition places the face slightly right of center, with the bright, warm colors contrasting sharply against the dark background. by Jack Menard

  • Surreal painting of a bird-like creature perched on a dark branch against a deep teal and blue background. The body of the creature resembles an owl, covered in layered, feathery textures painted in vibrant greens, yellows, reds, and soft blues. Instead of a typical head, the creature has a large, detailed human-like eye forming the entire head: the eye features a golden-yellow iris with radiating lines, a dark pupil, and long, defined eyelashes along the upper lid. The eyelids are painted in soft pink and beige tones, blending into the feathered body below. The branch runs horizontally across the lower portion of the image. The painting has visible brushwork and blends realism with fantasy elements. by Nhung Ngo

The panels have a glossy, enamel-like finish by Luc Nguyen

    Organic Elements

  • Sculptural ceramic piece featuring a stylized calla lily rising from a shallow circular base. The flower has a smooth, curved petal that wraps around a central spadix, mounted on a slender vertical stem. Midway up the stem, two arched supports connect to the base, creating a symmetrical, architectural structure. The entire piece is finished in a matte, earthy gray-brown tone with subtle surface variations suggesting hand-formed clay. The sculpture is set against a vibrant purple background that contrasts with the muted ceramic color. by Katherine Sclafani

    Untitled

  • Decorative table lamp featuring a cylindrical shade made of loosely woven, textured red fiber that glows warmly from the lightbulb inside. The shade sits on a vertical, cylindrical ceramic base in a muted gray-green tone. A sculpted, ribbon-like clay element wraps diagonally around the base, adding dimension and an organic form. The lamp’s metal frame is visible at the top inside the shade, supporting the bulb and shade structure. A black electrical cord extends from the lower left side. The lamp is set against a smooth, vibrant purple background that contrasts strongly with the red glow of the shade. by Katherine Sclafani

    Untitled

  • An expressive mixed-media painting set against a dark, shadowy background of deep blues, blacks, and greens, suggesting a moody, atmospheric landscape. Vertical streaks of green and hints of foliage-like textures appear throughout, evoking a forest or overgrown environment. A prominent diagonal form in the center—painted in fiery reds, oranges, and yellows—resembles a glowing branch, beam of light, or burning log cutting across the scene. Scattered across the composition are handwritten phrases and fragments of text in white paint, layered over the darker background. Some legible words and phrases include “Please,” “Where did that feeling go,” “younger?,” “I’m okay I made it,” and “You never messaged me first, why?” The phrases vary in size and orientation, giving the piece a chaotic, introspective feel. Small white star-like shapes and drips of paint are interspersed among the text. In the lower portion, darker forms suggest water, reflections, or dense undergrowth, with occasional patches of bright green and yellow adding contrast. The overall surface shows visible brushstrokes, drips, and layered textures. by Zachary St. Pierre

I Need You to Know I'm Sorry. Sorry for the Pain. Sorry for the Trauma. I Can Never Forgive Myself, But I Hope One Day You Can. (Goodbye)

  • A surreal landscape painting with a dramatic, colorful sky in shades of pink, purple, orange, and blue filling the upper half of the composition. Below, a misty, mountainous terrain recedes into the distance with soft, layered greens and grays suggesting trees and hills. In the middle ground on the left, a small animal-like figure stands on a rocky outcrop. On the right, a large, unusual rock formation rises above the landscape, shaped like a skull with hollow dark openings resembling eye sockets. The formation is streaked with warm tones of yellow, orange, and green, blending into the surrounding foliage. Vertical dark lines suggest tree trunks throughout the scene, and patches of fog or mist drift between them. The painting uses loose brushstrokes and atmospheric color blending to create a dreamlike, otherworldly setting. by Zachary St. Pierre

    Sleeping in Woods, Derelict

  • A detailed still life painting featuring a tabletop arrangement against a dark blue background. On the left, a glass jar holds green trailing plant cuttings with long, curling leaves. In front of the jar sits a closed, thick book with a pale green cover. Resting beside the book is an orange fruit. To the right, a green banker’s desk lamp with a glossy shade and brass stand is turned off, a pull chain hanging down. In front of the lamp is a small gold-toned container and a clear glass vessel holding a red and green leafy plant with stems draping outward. A patterned cloth in red and orange tones lies beneath the right-side objects. The composition uses strong contrasts of light and shadow, with careful attention to reflections on glass and metal surfaces. by Katherine Taylor
