The Art of Medicine! 2025

The Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts' (SIGMA) visual art exhibition The Art of Medicine! returns after a years-long hiatus on February 21, 2025 at 4 pm in the CALS Atrium.

The exhibition provides an opportunity to showcase the creative talent of medical school students, faculty and staff. This event is organized by LSU School of Medicine L4 Class President Jonathan Legier and SIGMA Vice President Joe Starns.

Live music provided by: Hope Bernier, Annelise Henry, Matthew Herrera, Samantha Seetharama, Ryan Smith, and Joe Starns.

About SIGMA: Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts is a group of medical students with a passion for things other than the hard sciences. Members are dancers, musicians, DJs, painters, poets and everything in between. Events are usually a good balance between an escape from school and a fundraiser for various charities. Past beneficiaries have included Camp Tiger, Make Music NOLA, Operation SMILE, and the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.

  • A bold abstract painting on a teal-green background featuring a white line drawing of two hands linking pinky fingers at the center. Surrounding the hands are colorful, playful marks—curved squiggles, zigzags, dots, triangles, and short bars—in shades of yellow, pink, red, blue, and mint. The layered shapes and symbols create a lively, rhythmic composition that suggests connection, movement, and energy. by Aiden M. Jacobs

  • A detailed anatomical illustration of the human spine and spinal nerves, drawn in pencil and ink on an off‑white page. Multiple views show the vertebral column from the side and individual vertebrae from above and below, with careful shading to define bone structure and textures. Blue handwritten labels identify regions such as cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae, along with anatomical features including the cauda equina, spinal nerves, pedicle, lamina, and intervertebral foramen. The overall composition resembles a medical or anatomy textbook study page, combining scientific accuracy with hand‑drawn precision. by Christi Kruger

Anatomy Sketch Book: Spine by C. Kruger

  • A detailed black‑and‑white ink drawing of a classical Roman-style bust, shown from the chest up and turned slightly to the viewer’s right. The figure has short, tightly curled hair, a beard, and a thoughtful expression, with draped fabric fastened at the shoulder by a circular clasp. Fine cross‑hatching and line work emphasize the texture of the skin and folds of the garment, and the drawing is centered on a white background with the artist’s signature near the bottom. by Christi Kruger

    Caracalla by C. Kruger

  • A black‑and‑white ink drawing of a vintage tea set arranged on a tabletop. At the center is an ornate teapot with decorative detailing and a curved spout, surrounded by a teacup and saucer, a small bowl with a spoon, and a shallow plate holding sliced lemons. The objects are rendered with expressive line work and cross‑hatching, emphasizing reflections, textures, and shadows, and the drawing is neatly framed with a white mat and thin black border. by Christi Kruger

  • A stylized landscape painting showing a wide field of red and purple flowers stretching to the horizon beneath a textured blue-and-white sky. A curved brown path cuts through the field from the foreground toward the distance, drawing the viewer’s eye across the composition. The contrast between the vibrant ground colors and the soft, cloudlike sky creates a sense of depth and calm openness. by Jonathan M. Legier

Beautiful Journey by J. M. Legier

  • An abstract painting with diagonal bands of bright pink, teal blue, and soft lavender. Fluid, ribbon-like streaks of white, silver, and dark blue paint sweep across the surface, appearing poured or splashed, with drips and glossy textures visible. Semi‑transparent triangular shapes beneath the paint add layered geometric structure, creating a dynamic sense of motion and contrast. by Jonathan M. Legier

Best Laid Plans by J. M. Legier

  • An expressive abstract painting featuring thick, sweeping brushstrokes and energetic paint splatters layered over a dark background. Vivid colors—turquoise, pink, white, green, orange, and red—swirl and collide near the center, creating a sense of explosive motion. Curving arcs of paint and dripping lines radiate outward, giving the composition a dynamic, turbulent feeling, as if the colors are bursting and flowing simultaneously across the surface. by Jonathan M. Legier

Flower in Bloom by J. M. Legier

  • A stylized grayscale painting of a nude human torso shown from shoulders to upper thighs against a black background. The figure’s arm is raised, and simplified anatomical shapes and symbols are layered inside the body, suggesting internal organs and structure. Bold white outlines trace the figure’s contours, creating strong contrast and an abstract, graphic interpretation of the human form. by Jonathan M. Legier

    Introspective by J. M. Legier

  • A geometric painting of a nude human figure standing with arms extended outward and eyes closed, centered against a background of intersecting angular shapes. The body is rendered in warm skin tones, while fragmented triangles and polygons in shades of blue, teal, white, and navy overlap across the figure and surrounding space. The layered shapes create a crystalline, cubist‑inspired effect that conveys balance, openness, and calm within a dynamic, abstract composition. by Jonathan M. Legier

On the Table by J. M. Legier

  • An abstract painting composed of dense vertical bands of color, including blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and purple. The surface is heavily textured with layered speckles, splatters, and fine dots of paint, creating a rich, confetti‑like effect. The overlapping colors and varied intensity give the piece a sense of depth, rhythm, and continuous movement across the canvas. by Jonathan M. Legier

Over the Rainbow by J. M. Legier

  • An abstract, high‑contrast artwork featuring thin white lines woven densely across a dark background. The lines curve and intersect to form two large, twisting, hourglass‑like shapes that overlap at the center, creating the illusion of depth, motion, and three‑dimensional space. The geometric web of repeated lines suggests mathematical precision and continuous movement, drawing the eye inward toward the central crossing. by Jonathan M. Legier

The Complexities of the Mind by J. M. Legier

  • An open book displayed flat, showing a chapter titled “A Delicate Situation” on the right-hand page. Two textured blue sculptural hands rise from the bottom edge of the image, positioned as if reaching or supporting the book. An orange-red sculptural form extends from the top edge toward the center, falling into the hands. The combination of printed text and brightly colored hands creates a mixed-media composition contrasting literature with expressive, tactile elements. by Colleen Leslie
