Introduction: Being overweight increases risk for negative health outcomes due to factors like increased cardiovascular events. Maintaining a healthy weight increases lifespan, saves money otherwise spent on healthcare, and improves quality of life. Being married/living with a partner generally has a positive impact on both physical and mental health; however, few studies explore the relationship between marital status and weight between men and women. Here, we assess weight between men and women who are married/living with a partner, widowed/divorced/separated, or never married. Purpose: This study intends to facilitate the development of interventional screening tools for the unique healthcare needs of families by establishing a positive correlation between these variables. Methods: The datasets were acquired from the 2021-2023 reporting cycle from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, opened through SAS Universal Viewer, then transferred into Excel for analysis. Results: Two-way ANOVA resulted in a p-value of 0.001, which revealed that gender and marital status have a significant interaction effect on weight. Women had the highest mean weight of 80.7 kg in the group that was never married. Men, however, had the highest mean weight of 89.86 kg in the group that was married/living with a partner. The p-value of 0.14 for the main effect of marital status on weight was not significant. However, the analysis revealed that gender did have a significant main effect on weight (p-value = 6.29E-39). Discussion: The results showed no significant main effect of marital status on weight, so the null hypothesis was accepted. Understanding how marital status affects the weight of men and women can help design screening tools for providers to help reduce preventable poor health outcomes.
