Abstract Background: The Amputee Mobility Predictor (AMPPro) is an objective measure to assist with the planning of treatment plans in prosthetic rehabilitation. It provides a standardized method to assess functional capabilities and assign Medicare Functional Classification Levels (K-levels). Purpose: The purpose of this case study is to investigate prosthetic training for a patient with a trans-humeral and transfemoral amputation. Case Description: The patient is a 24 year old female who sustained a left transfemoral and left transhumeral amputation following a severe motorcycle accident. She presented to outpatient physical therapy at UMC eight months post-injury, reporting difficulty walking long distances and not functioning at her prior level of function. The initial evaluation showed this patient had impairments in dynamic balance, endurance, and gait mechanics, contributing to the patient's primary complaint of fatigue and an inability to ambulate at the same pace as friends. Outcomes: Small improvements were observed, including improved endurance without assistive device and improved stair negotiation. Due to the patient's limited attendance, we could not obtain accurate measurements to assess progress over the planned timepointsDiscussion: The endurance training and dynamic balance in gait addressed the patient's fatigue and helped her engage in higher-level activities. These interventions facilitated progress toward her functional goals despite attendance issues. Future research should explore the unique balance deficits in individuals with ipsilateral transhumeral and transfemoral amputations, with an emphasis on biomechanical and neurophysiological adaptations. Research could provide direction of targeted rehabilitation strategies and improve prognostic tools for this population.
