Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly integrated into medical education and clinical care. Clerkship students are adopting AI for studying, clinical preparation, and clinical reasoning, often more rapidly than institutions and educators have developed guidance. To inform this commentary, we reviewed publicly available resources from U.S. national organizations involved in clerkship education. Guidance was limited, heterogeneous, and primarily educator-focused, with few resources addressing student use in clinical settings. As accreditation standards increasingly emphasize preparation for AI-enabled practice, we advocate for purpose-driven, proactive guidance that supports safe, transparent, and educationally meaningful AI use in clinical learning environments.
