Abstract

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) serves an important role in the United States as a key regulator of food, cosmetics, medications, medical products, and much more. They cite their mission is to protect the public health of the nation through regulation of products that have the potential to affect the health of the population. Many nations look to the FDA for guidance into how to better protect the health of their citizens, and the road to achieving this international authority was not without obstacles. This chapter discusses the history of the FDA and pivotal moments in time that forced government authorities to institute new regulatory practices that created the foundation that the FDA stands on today. This chapter will also delve into different products the FDA regulates, specifically those used in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
