Abstract
The present investigation provides an in-depth description of novel synthetic opioid (NSO) drug facts, from the origins of the opium poppy to current compounds that are on the market illicitly. The rise of opioid usage has led to the synthetic production of novel opioids that no longer arise from plant origins but from artificial compounds. Although these compounds have a similar mechanism of action of original opioids, these novel drugs often have a higher potency and rate of absorption, thereby enhancing the CNS adverse effects. Understanding patient risk factors for consuming these medications and making the correct diagnosis using modern screening techniques is vital to fully comprehend novel synthetic opioids. NSOs even play a role in anesthetic management, especially preoperatively. NSOs have made a global impact on the opioid crisis, and a reduction in fatalities from these compounds must be a forefront goal in the medical community.
