Abstract
Pain, due to its important role in survival, depends upon a complex and redundant network of connections that in the acute phase ensures the transmission of signals that alert an individual to impending danger in order to avoid or minimize injury and preserve function. Importantly, minimizing pain while treating the underlying cause and during convalescence improves compliance with treatment and recovery of function. When pain becomes chronic, this complex system no longer fulfills a survival role, but destroys the quality of life for those who experience the pain, for their families and for society as a whole. The most effective approach for managing pain employs a comprehensive assessment and multimodality treatment to maximize pain control while preserving function. Analgesic and adjuvant medications, although not without adverse effects, provide important and reliable options in multimodality therapy, generally due to ease of administration, relative cost, and reversible adverse effects when encountered.
