Abstract
It is well documented that the embryonic vitelline vein contributes to the portal venous system, developing at 5 weeks gestation. It is suggested that after its partial regression, the left vitelline vein ultimately remains as the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) (Franceschi et al. 2022; Marks 1969). However, a 2017 study of 5- to 6-week-old embryos suggested that the SMV develops instead from a tissue cleft formed by the regression of the left vitelline vein in a peritoneal fold of the midgut mesentery (Abe et al. 2017).
