Abstract
This chapter explores heterotopic/referred pain in the orofacial region, where the perceived site of pain differs from its source. It details mechanisms such as convergence-projection theory, central sensitization, and neuronal plasticity, which contribute to pain referral. Clinical examples include referred pain from dental, muscular, joint, and distant systemic sources. Emphasis is placed on thorough history taking, comprehensive examination, and exclusion of local pathology to accurately identify heterotopic/referred pain. Understanding these patterns is crucial for correct diagnosis, avoiding unnecessary interventions, and implementing targeted, effective management strategies.
