Abstract

As Education Librarian at LSU Health New Orleans, I was tasked with reviving a monthly education program in 2024; it was dormant due to COVID-19 and librarian retirements. Previously ran an education program on makerspace equipment at a public library. This previous experience was beneficial in relaunching the program at LSU Health New Orleans.

Instructional sessions are typically 20 to 30 minutes, set on a fixed day of the week and time slot. Sessions take place inside a classroom located in the library and over Zoom to maximize potential attendance. Recordings of session are posted to YouTube so people can watch at their convenience. A variety of topics have been covered in the sessions, topics are geared towards students, faculty, and staff interests. Topic requests are accepted as well. Sessions are promoted to campus multiple ways: social media, physical signage in library, campus digital signage, LISTSERV, and newsletters. The instructional sessions are a valuable “low stakes” environment for librarians to test out a certain topic or lecture strategy. Librarians give lectures on campus to students often, as well as collaborating with the IT department for their highly attended monthly office hours. Having an environment to create new instructional materials and practice them is valuable.

Low attendance initially, but sessions were still useful for training library staff. Promotion through various methods, an established day and time slot, more sessions per month, and sessions that served specific information needs resulted in higher and steady attendance. Statistics for sessions are recorded and organized by fiscal year.
