Barthelemy First Lady Michaele (pronounced Meek-ah-el, like Gorbachev) Barthelemy is as dedicated to her role as First Lady as she was to staying home and raising her children for 17 years. She has learned over the years that there is a time and a season for everything. Known by family and friends as "Mickey," Mrs. Barthelemy felt a deep sense of satisfaction in raising her children but admits that it was hard work especially when her husband, Mayor Sidney Barthelemy, was away a lot when he was State Senator. Mrs. Barthelemy knew though that one day her husband would run for mayor and when that day came, she would be ready and able to get involved. And that she did. Mrs. Barthelemy is very committed to the people of New Orleans and has worked hard to improve the city. She is active in many civic, cultural and charitable organizations and has served on more than forty boards and commissions during her tenure as First Lady. Mrs. Barthelemy has worked hard to help the homeless and the hungry in our city. She serves on an advisory committee for Hope House—a nonprofit organization that provides emergency food, rent and utilities to people in the Irish Channel area, including St. Thomas Project. She is a Board Member for Christopher Park Home Buyers Association—a nonprofit organization located on the West Bank in Algiers that allows low-income families to rent townhouses with the option to buy. And she has served as Honorary Chairman for the New Orleans Artists Against Hunger and Homeless Concert for the last two years. Mrs. Barthelemy has helped women and children both at home and abroad. She has contributed her time to the YWCA, which has a battered women's program, a rape crisis program, a day-care and a foster children program. She has chaired events for the Junior League, an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. She has helped families in third world countries by working with UNICEF. UNICEF teaches parents oral rehydration, provides immunization against childhood diseases and teaches parents how to dig for fresh water wells. Mrs. Barthelemy served as an Honorary Co-Chairperson for the March of Dimes "Year of the Family" campaign in 1987-88. That program promoted good health care for the family. The March of Dimes investigates the cause of more than 3,000 birth defects. In addition, Mrs. Barthelemy, along with her husband, Co-Chaired a Multiple Sclerosis fundraiser. She has also Co-Chaired two benefits for people with AIDS. The proceeds went to Unted Services for AIDS. Mrs. Barthelemy has also been very active in promoting the arts in New Orleans. She is an Honorary Co-Chair of the Arts Council and the New Orleans Museum of Art. She has served on the board of the New Orleans City Ballet and the New Orleans Symphony for the last five years. Mrs. Barthelemy was a Board Member of the Louisiana Nature Center in 1987. She was an Honorary Co-Chair for the Friends of City Park 1987 Holiday Season and Children's Hospital 1987-88 Sugar Plum Ball. She also served as President of Christmas in New Orleans, Inc. Mrs. Barthelemy was Co-Chairman of the Advisory Committee for "Bridge Lights" in 1989 and Honorary Chairman of the "Save Our Cemeteries—Security Lighting Benefit." She was also a Board Member for the 1989 Crescent City Celebration. Mrs. Barthelemy has worked hard during her years as First Lady. She has helped many and her example is an inspiration for all. We are deeply honored to have her as our Commencement Speaker and wish her continued success. 12 The Commencement Speaker 13 All participants in this program, candidates for degrees, their families, and other special commencement guests are sincerely requested to honor America in the singing of OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM, the lyrics of which follow: O say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming Whose broad stripes and bright stars Through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched Were so gallantly streaming And the rocket's red glare The bomb bursting in air Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave Francis Scott Key 14 ACADEMIC HERALDRY: THE SYMBOLS OF LEARNING The college or university commencement procession today, in this Nation and abroad, is a pageant, alive and bright with dress and ceremony inherited from the medieval European universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. To preserve their dignity and meaning, it became necessary for those universities to set rules for academic dress. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895 and set up a suitable code of academic dress for the colleges and universities of the United States. In 1932, The American Council on Education presented a revised code which, for the most part, governs the style of academic dress today. The principle features of academic dress are three: the gown, the cap, and the hood. The Gown. The flowing gown comes from the twelfth century. It has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, because it completely covers any dress of rank or social standing beneath. It is gray for the associate degree and black for all other degrees, with pointed sleeves for the Associate and Bachelor's degree; long, closed sleeves for the Master's degree with a slit for the arm; and round, open sleeves for the Doctor's degree. The gown worn for Associate, Bachelor's or Master's degree has no trimmings. The gown for the Doctor's degree is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color that represents that particular faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains. For certain institutions the official colors of the college or university may appear on the gown or its decorations. The Cap. The freed slave in Ancient Rome won the privilege of wearing a cap, and so the academic cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as a square to symbolize the book, although some authorities claim that the mortarboard is a symbol of the masons, a privileged guild. The color of the tassel on the cap denotes the discipline, although a gold tassel may be worn with any Doctor's gown. The Hood. The heraldic hood is an inverted shield with one or more chevrons (an insignia consisting of a V-shaped bar or bars) of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college or university. The color of the face of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining of the hood designates the university or college from which the degree was granted.
