Description

Introduction: Different instructional models exist for engaging students in interprofessional education. Peer teaching has garnered attention in allied health and nursing higher education pedagogy owing to its efficacy in enhancing learning outcomes. Developmental milestone screening is imperative in order to identify and connect children and families with early intervention services. Fostering and strengthening the relationship between allied health and nursing students before they enter the workforce may improve early identification of communication delays.

Purpose: This project shares outcomes from an interprofessional peer-led learning activity for primary care pediatric nurse practitioner (PCPNP) students enrolled in an advanced nursing assessment course on routine developmental screening, with specific emphasis on communication-specific milestones.

Methods: PCPNP students engaged in a learning activity consisting of three parts: a developmental milestone gallery walk; a presentation regarding developmental screening and developmental milestones; and practice with case studies utilizing a formal developmental milestone screener. A pre- and post-survey was administered to assess learner satisfaction and self-confidence in learning.

Results: PCPNP students agreed or strongly agreed that the learning activities imparted a variety of educational materials, aided in learning of developmental milestone screening curriculum, would benefit their professional practice, and increased self-confidence in developmental milestone screening.

Discussion: Collaboration between allied health and PCPNP students through peer teaching holds significant importance in the context of pediatric primary care, and for healthcare training programs interested in improving educational experiences that tailor to interprofessional learning and practice.
