Description
Background: Dyspareunia is pain experienced before, during, or after sexual intercourse and has a biopsychosocial etiology. This condition can lead to anxiety and depression in patients and its complex etiology requires a multimodal approach to treatment.
Purpose: This review aimed to determine the efficacy of treating dyspareunia with multimodal approaches targeting both mind and body treatment strategies.
Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Cinahl, Embase, ProQuest, and Pedro for articles published from January 2003 to August 2023. Eight studies met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Three randomized controlled trials and 5 prospective cohort studies were included. Data was extracted and risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-I and ROBINS-2 tools.
Results: The quality of the studies ranged from low risk of bias to serious risk of bias. All studies found positive effects of utilizing a multimodal treatment approach in reducing sexual pain and improving sexual dysfunction and the psychological aspects that may accompany dyspareunia.
Discussion/Conclusion: The findings suggest that comprehensive multimodal treatment methods that address the psychological and physical components of dyspareunia may be effective in improving quality of life and reducing pain. Further research with randomized controlled trials is needed to confirm these findings.
