Description

Introduction: Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive form of primary brain tumor, presenting significant challenges in treatment and rehabilitation due to its infiltrative nature and poor prognosis. Despite advancements in cancer care, effective rehabilitation strategies for glioblastoma patients remain limited.

Purpose: This study aims to explore a physical therapy rehabilitation approach for improving functional mobility in patients with stage IV glioblastoma. Through a detailed case report, the challenges faced by these patients, the interventions employed, and the outcomes achieved are explored.

Methods: A 58-year-old female with stage IV glioblastoma underwent rehabilitation following a revision right temporal craniotomy for tumor resection and debulking. Assessment included functional mobility, cognitive deficits, and sensory impairments. Rehabilitation interventions focused on improving mobility, reducing caregiver burden, and optimizing quality of life.

Results: The patient showed significant improvement in functional mobility, transitioning from maximal assistance for bed mobility and transfers to minimal assistance. Family education and training played a crucial role in facilitating a safe transition to home care with hospice support. Quality indicators demonstrated progress in car transfers, wheelchair mobility, and functional transfers.

Discussion: This case highlights the importance of tailored rehabilitation interventions and family involvement in enhancing outcomes for stage IV glioblastoma patients. Further research is warranted to identify optimal rehabilitation strategies and assess long-term outcomes, particularly in the context of palliative care. Addressing the unique needs of glioblastoma patients in rehabilitation can improve their quality of life and alleviate caregiver burden.
